Sleeping in a converted lighthouse on the Brittany coast

Some stays are about the room; this one is about the weather. A converted signal house on Brittany's wild Finistere coast trades minibars and room service for storm-watching and the smell of salt.

The keeper's quarters have been reworked with linen, slate and a wood stove, but the bones are unchanged — thick granite walls, deep window seats and a spiral stair to the old lamp room.

Mornings begin with oysters from the bay below and end with a fire as the lighthouse beam still sweeps overhead. There is no television and the wifi is poetic.

Come in the shoulder seasons for the drama. A spring gale against that glass, mug of cider in hand, is worth more than any five-star spa.

Good to know

  • Come in the shoulder seasons for the storms and the empty coast path.
  • Bring layers and a book; there is no television and little signal.
  • Time low tide for the oyster beds and rock pools below the house.
