Sri Lanka's hill-country line climbs through terraced tea gardens and over the famous Nine Arch Bridge on its way to the cool town of Ella.
The train from Kandy climbs almost from the first mile, leaving the humid lowlands behind for a cooler, greener world of tea estates that carpet every hillside in tight, geometric rows. Pickers in bright saris move between the bushes as the train passes, and the smell of processing sheds drifts through open windows at stations like Nanu Oya, the stop for Nuwara Eliya.
Doors are left open for the whole ride, which is technically against the rules and practically the entire point — passengers lean out or sit in the doorway with legs dangling as the carriages sway through curve after curve. Second and third class are where the real atmosphere lives; the reserved first-class observation car is comfortable but oddly sealed off from the experience everyone comes for.
The line's postcard moment is the Nine Arch Bridge outside Ella, a colonial-era viaduct built without steel — legend says its engineer used only brick, cement and railway track after wartime steel shortages — now framed by jungle and tea slopes on every side. Get off a stop early at Demodara and walk to the bridge for photos before continuing on to Ella itself.
Book second class in advance through the official reservation system if you want a guaranteed seat — this route has become popular enough that unreserved carriages fill early. The full Kandy–Ella run takes six to seven hours; treat it as the destination, not the commute.
