Colombia rewards a slow diagonal crossing, from the wax-palm valleys of the Coffee Triangle to the colonial streets and beaches of the Caribbean coast.
Base yourself in Salento, a candy-coloured town in the heart of the Coffee Triangle, and give a full day to the Cocora Valley, where wax palms — Colombia's national tree, and among the tallest palms on earth — rise absurdly out of the cloud forest. A working coffee farm tour nearby is worth the two or three hours; most are small family operations happy to walk you through the whole process from cherry to cup, and the coffee you drink at the end is better than anything you'll find in a café.
Break the journey north in Medellín for a couple of days — the transformation of a city once defined by violence into one of South America's most liveable is best understood on a walking tour through Comuna 13, where outdoor escalators and street art now draw more visitors than headlines once did. From there, fly rather than drive to Cartagena; the distance is long and the coastal route offers little the flight doesn't.
Cartagena's walled old town, all pastel balconies and horse-drawn carriages, is worth two days before you head further along the coast to Tayrona National Park or the looser, more backpacker-friendly beach town of Palomino. Tayrona's beaches sit at the end of a jungle hike and close entirely one day a week for indigenous ceremonial rest, so check the calendar before you plan around it — turning up on the wrong day is a common and avoidable disappointment.
