The gap between a great hostel and a miserable one has nothing to do with price, and everything to do with a handful of details most booking sites bury.
Read the recent reviews, not the aggregate score — a 9.2 rating built on reviews from three years ago tells you nothing about who runs the place now. Filter for reviews from the last two or three months and look specifically for mentions of noise, cleanliness, and staff responsiveness, since those are the three things that degrade fastest under bad management and rarely show up in the photos.
Bed design matters more than most people budget for: look for pod-style bunks with privacy curtains and individual reading lights over open dorms with exposed beds, and check whether lockers are large enough for a full backpack, not just a daypack. A hostel that publishes its locker dimensions or shows them in photos is usually one that's thought carefully about the guest experience elsewhere too.
Location trades off against price in predictable ways — a hostel a twenty-minute walk from the centre is often half the price of one in the old town, and that gap covers a lot of taxi rides if you need them occasionally. Book directly through the hostel's own site rather than a booking platform where possible; many offer a small discount for skipping the commission, and it's easier to sort out issues with a place you've corresponded with directly.
