Ljubljana is small enough to feel like a village and confident enough to feel like a real capital.
Start at the Triple Bridge and follow the river through the pedestrianised old town, where outdoor cafes spill onto the banks of the Ljubljanica and dragon statues guard the bridge that gives the city its symbol. The centre is almost entirely car-free, which makes wandering without a map the best strategy the city offers.
Take the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle for a view over the terracotta rooftops to the Julian Alps beyond — on a clear day, Triglav is visible on the horizon, a reminder of how close the mountains sit to this small capital. Come back down for lunch at the Central Market, where farmers sell directly from stalls along the riverbank most mornings.
Cross to Metelkova, a former military barracks turned graffiti-covered arts squat, for a look at a rougher, more improvised Ljubljana after dark. Rent a bike for the second day and ride out to Tivoli Park, the city's green lung, before closing the weekend with a slow dinner by the river — Ljubljana does not rush, and neither should you.
