Imperial grandeur, coffee-house culture and green spaces — Vienna is built for a slow, civilised long weekend.
The imperial core
Begin inside the Ring, where the Hofburg, the Opera and the museums sit within an easy stroll of one another. Give the Kunsthistorisches an unhurried morning for the Bruegels alone, then recover in a coffee house — a melange and a slice of Sachertorte, newspaper on a wooden holder, no one hurrying you out.
Vienna is a city of rituals, and the coffee house is the one worth adopting. Order slowly and stay long; the waiter in the waistcoat has seen it all before.
Beyond the Ring
- Schonbrunn gardens at opening time, before the tour buses reach the Gloriette.
- The Naschmarkt for a lunch of falafel, cheese and pickled everything.
- A tram ride out to the Prater and one turn on the old Ferris wheel at dusk.
Close the weekend with a standing-room ticket at the Staatsoper — a few euros buys a place under the chandeliers and a story to tell. Vienna does not shout; it simply assumes you will come back, and usually it is right.
